Austin Thompson, now, 18, was 15 when he killed five people and injured two others in Raleigh, North Carolina, on Nov. 14, 2022.
He pleaded guilty to all charges, including five counts of first-degree murder, last week, and his sentencing hearing is expected to last into next week.
The victims were his 16-year-old brother, James Roger Thompson; Nicole Connors, 52; Susan Karnatz, 49; Mary Marshall, 35; and Gabriel Torres, 29 and an off-duty Raleigh police officer.
The U.S. Supreme Court ruled in 2012 that courts must consider "mitigating characteristics of youth" before imposing a life sentence on someone convicted of a homicide committed then they were under the age of 18. Many courts call such hearings "Miller hearings" in reference to the name of the SCOTUS case, Miller v. Alabama.
Judge Paul Ridgeway in North Carolina's 10th Judicial District is presiding over Thompson's case.
