The filing deadline for Democrats and Republicans passed Tuesday. We crunched the numbers from the State Board of Elections. The two-party system is not healthy.
44% of legislative races have no two-party general election. 28 races covering 35 seats have no competition at any stage. No contested primary, no general election opponent. Those legislators go to Annapolis without a single voter having had a choice. County offices are worse: 78% of countywide races are single-party only. One State's Attorney race out of 24 has both parties.
Compared to 2022, the structural problem didn't move. Republicans went from not filing in 16 House races to 24. Democrats shrank from 11 to 3. The two-party system is getting worse at producing competition.
The long-term answer is multiparty democracy. The short-term answer is candidates. July 6 is the filing deadline for Green, Libertarian, Working Class, and independent candidates. If you're thinking about running in an uncontested race, email us: [email protected] or [email protected].
