Cold Cranking Amps and RC or Reserve Capacity are the most you need to pay attention to when buying a new battery, of course there are other things beside rating you need to take in consideration such as longest warranty, Name brand and etc, however you should start with vehicle specific and follow manufacture recommendation for your car or truck
The higher the RC and CCA the more expensive the battery
Car and Truck Batteries are labeled in group Size like 8D, 40R, 24, 24F, 27 and so on and those group size are defined by BCI Battery Council International, The group size refer to the Terminal location whether positive and negative terminal left or right top or Side position and best physical dimensions, So group size will confirm best fit and properly held down battery,, however there is a guide provided to you from where you buy your battery to best fit your car.
Car Battery ratings: CA” Cranking Amps”, CCA “Cold Cranking Amps”, RC “Reserved Capacity, C20 “AH Amps per hour”
**So what is Cranking Amps or CA: How many amps a battery can provide for 30 Seconds at 32 F but still provide no less than 7.2V for 12V battery?
**What is CCA or Cold Cranking Amps: this for a cold weather, it measures how many amps the battery can provide at 0 degrees F for 30Seconds and still holds 7.2V for 12 V battery, This mean battery with higher Cold Cranking amps will start your vehicle stronger and faster in cold temperature, So you need to consider this if you live in cold climate, never go below OEM Rating
**What is RC or Reserve Capacity, it is rated in minutes, it is the ability of battery to deliver continuous current of 25Amps at 80 Degrees F without falling below 10.5 V for a 12 V Battery, The higher this # the better.
In another word if you left your lights on while the car is off, or ignition on and radio on, higher RC will keep enough voltage for the engine to crank over and the car start but you are limited to the reserve capacity your battery have.
C20 or AH, this refers to the energy stored in the battery, it means Continuous delivery of energy for 20 hours at 80 degrees F without falling below 10.5V for 12V battery.
In Conclusion if you live in Cold Climate, you need to consider higher CCA and RC.
