SHIRA - Singing in Hebrew, is the new Album produced by Shira Karmon, containing songs in Ladino - Jewish-Spanish, Hebrew and Yiddish, most of which are arranged by Rainer Maria Nero. Eliezer Ben Yehuda was the primary driving force behind the revival of the Hebrew language. This song about him was written in one night as two icons of the Israeli culture created one of the happiest songs, celebrating the new words intigrated into the ancient biblical language.
Eliezer ben – Yehuda Matti Caspi/ Yaron London
Like the prophets in awe of god,
He was in awe of the verb, the adjective, and the noun.
And at midnight, as the lantern lights his window,
He would write in his dictionary his own psalms.
Beautiful words, flying words,
Rolling off the tongue.
Eliezer, when will you go to sleep?
Your tall figure has already shrunk twice its size.
And the Hebrew who waited two thousand years
She will wait for you until morning rize.
Eliezer Ben Yehuda
A funny Jewish guy
Words words, words words
He fabricated them from his feverish mind.
If the Hebrew slept for two thousand decades, so what?
Let us awaken her and invent the initiative,
The iron, the bomb, the furniture.
At the tip of a feather in eloquent writing.
He wrote Cauliflower, wrote ice cream,
Wrote the whole, but the whole Ben Yehuda dictionary.
And he kept creating words
And his swift feather did not rest
And the Hebrew language grew
And the language didn’t recognize her own appearance nor
The sight of her image at dawn.
Eliezer Ben Yehuda
A funny Jewish guy
Words words, words words
He fabricated them from his feverish mind.
And a son was born to him, and thus the man said:
This is the eldest, I will call him Ben Yehuda Itamar.
From infancy to weaning, from the day of his arrival
In his Brith bond until his death -
He commited to the Hebrew language.
And to the fight against the foreign languages.
Itamar - indeed, became a man
A tall stature, handsome and pleasent to look at
And the Hebrew anguage he spoke was his second nature.
Itamar Ben Aby, (Eliezer Ben Yehuda)
Whose father was a prophet
A man to my liking-
Eliezer Ben Yehuda
A funny Jewish guy
Words words, words words
He fabricated them from his feverish mind.
