At the final quarterly Da'wa workshop of the year 2025, organized by the Lekki Muslim Ummah (LEMU), experts warned parents about the risks of early smartphone exposure to children while urging the Muslim community to harness the benefits of artificial intelligence (AI) for societal progress.
The event, themed "Islam, Muslims and Artificial Intelligence," featured discussions on the dual nature of technology and its impact on society.
Representing the Vice-Chancellor of Summit University Offa, Professor Abiodun Aibinu, software engineer and AI researcher Sodiq Akanmu highlighted AI's evolution from optimizing tasks to solving complex problems in sectors like healthcare, education, transportation, and finance.
Professor Aibinu noted that AI, with human oversight, can unlock opportunities for Muslims, including scholarships, career growth, and advancements in Islamic finance.
The Chief Imam of LEMU, Dr. Ridwan Jamiu, speaking on "Smartphones: Between Goodness and Villainy," cautioned that early access to screens, social media, and smartphones exposes children to more harm than good.
Dr. Jamiu emphasized, urging guardians to monitor digital content exposure closely due to its profound effects on developing minds.
The workshop called on the Muslim Ummah to balance technological progress with ethical considerations, leveraging AI’s potential while safeguarding against its risks.
