Welcome to our “30 Seconds on Shipping” video series, brought to you by Great Circle International, https://gcinternational.ca/
Today we are going to looking at the shipping term SOLAS or Safety of Life at Sea.
The SOLAS program was started after the disaster of the Titanic in 1912.
The program is designed to keep the sailors at sea safe.
The main point from SOLAS that most shippers see is the VGM or Verified Gross Mass.
The VGM is a declaration made to the steamship line stating the exact weight of the container and the cargo in the container.
This is important as understating the weight on a container can cause a serious accident during loading, sailing, or unloading depending on the container. There are strict weight limits on containers.
