Over 3,000 years, Yemen rose from a center of ancient wealth to a stage of prolonged conflict. In antiquity, kingdoms like Sabaʾ, Himyar, and Qataban prospered through the incense trade and advanced irrigation, earning Yemen the name Arabia Felix. Its decline began after the collapse of the Maʾrib Dam in the 6th century and successive foreign invasions, weakening its economic and political foundations.
In the last 30 years, Yemen’s fall has deepened through repeated civil wars, starting with internal conflicts after unification in 1990, the 1994 civil war, the Houthi insurgency from 2004, and the full-scale war since 2015. Yemen has become a theater of regional power rivalry, mainly between Saudi Arabia and Iran, with Gulf states, Western powers, and regional militias turning the country into a proxy battlefield. This has devastated Yemen’s economy, infrastructure, and social fabric, making its modern decline as tragic as its ancient rise was glorious.
