The online conference jointly organized by the GCCA – Global Cement and Concrete Association and ESG Education & Business consulting experts in Vietnam was successfully held, attracting the participation of industry leaders, experts, and enterprises in the construction materials sector.

At the event, Mr. Andrew Minson, GCCA’s Director of Sustainable Development, highlighted core solutions in the decarbonization roadmap of the cement industry. These include co-processing of waste as an alternative to fossil fuels, and the use of alternative binders to reduce the clinker ratio. He cited the success story from Mexico City, where more than 1 million tons of municipal waste are co-processed annually, resulting in a reduction of 500,000 tons of CO₂ and over 10,000 tons of methane – a greenhouse gas 25 times more potent than CO₂.

Following this, Mr. Nicolas Antoniou, GCCA’s Sustainable Design & Construction Manager, introduced the cement and concrete carbon rating system. The system is designed to support both businesses and governments by enabling:

Green procurement and the adoption of low-carbon building materials.
Transparent environmental reporting aligned with international standards.
Fair comparison of cement and concrete products based on carbon footprint.

Mr. Antoniou also presented the GCCA EPD Tool, an industry-specific platform that simplifies the development of Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) for clinker, cement, concrete, aggregates, and precast products. Pre-verified by GCCA, the tool can reduce verification costs by up to 50% and better equip manufacturers to meet international customer requirements.

During the discussion session, experts addressed questions from Vietnamese enterprises regarding the issuance of EPDs for cement products manufactured domestically but exported abroad. GCCA confirmed that the EPD Tool supports multiple standard versions (European, North American, etc.), enabling Vietnamese companies to adapt their EPDs to specific export markets.

Concluding the conference, Mr. Nguyen Dinh Quyen, ESG Consultant in Vietnam, emphasized:

“Vietnam has tremendous potential to adopt the carbon rating system and EPD Tool, advancing sustainable development goals while enhancing the competitiveness of Vietnamese cement and concrete products in international markets.”
