The winter sun shimmers through the maple trees, as we walk and converse with Linda Hess about the nature of the ‘self’ – a ‘shimmering reality’ as she describes it – transient, constantly in flux, ungraspable. Zen and Buddhism come into a dialogue with Kabir as she speaks of ‘shoonya’, the struggle to let go of the self and be at peace with the vulnerabilities of life.
Dr. Linda Hess is one of the finest scholars and translators of Kabir into the English language who has taught at the Stanford University for several decades. She was drawn to India in the 1960s and has been working on Kabir oral and textual traditions ever since. Her books include The Bijak of Kabir, considered by many to be one of the best translations of Kabir into English, Singing Emptiness and Bodies of Song. Contact Linda at [email protected].
This is the closing episode of the film Chalo Hamara Des (Come to My Country), a journey in search of the des (country) invoked in the poetry of Kabir. The film interweaves the stories of two people from two very different countries, Prahlad Tipanya and North American scholar Linda Hess. Where is Kabir’s country? The answer is elusive, as we journey through song and poem into these two lives, brought together in an unlikely friendship by the cross-cultural resonance of Kabir.
