Hiroo Onoda was a Japanese intelligence officer who continued fighting World War II on Lubang Island in the Philippines for 29 years after Japan's surrender in 1945.
Mission and Isolation
In December 1944, Onoda, then 22, was sent to Lubang with orders from Major Yoshimi Taniguchi to conduct guerrilla warfare and never surrender or take his own life. Taniguchi promised they would return for him. When Allied forces arrived in February 1945, Onoda and three other soldiers went into hiding, surviving on jungle resources and occasional theft from locals for nearly three decades.
Refusal to Believe the War Ended
Despite numerous attempts to inform them the war had ended, including leaflets and personal messages, Onoda and his companions believed them to be propaganda. Over the years, his fellow soldiers either surrendered or were killed, but Onoda persisted, even interpreting US planes from the Vietnam War as evidence of ongoing conflict.
The Encounter and Surrender
In 1974, Japanese explorer Norio Suzuki found Onoda on Lubang. Onoda trusted Suzuki but refused to surrender without orders from his commanding officer. Suzuki returned to Japan, located Major Taniguchi, now a bookseller, and brought him back to Lubang. In March 1974, Taniguchi formally relieved Onoda of duty, leading to his emotional surrender.
Legacy and Controversy
Upon returning to Japan, Onoda was a hero but found it difficult to adjust. His story is controversial due to reports that his group killed around 30 Filipino civilians during their time in hiding. He later lived in Brazil
