Is Ha Long Bay worth the hype? Here’s our honest experience.

Our Ha Long Bay adventure starts before sunrise with an early morning pickup that feels a little chaotic at first. We’re waiting on a street corner surrounded by buses with different names, wondering if we’re in the right spot… until our guide shows up, driving around personally making sure everyone gets on the correct bus.

After a couple of hours on the road with one quick stop for coffee, snacks, and a washroom break, we finally arrive at the Ha Long Bay docks. First order of business? Another incredible Vietnamese coffee, along with a visit to a local pearl factory to see how pearls are harvested and processed.

Then it’s time to board the boat.

We cruise through the stunning limestone formations of Ha Long Bay, stop off at a quiet beach for about an hour to relax and explore, and then head back onboard for a surprisingly good buffet lunch.

The highlight of the day is visiting the largest cave in Ha Long Bay. Walking through it feels unreal—massive chambers, dramatic lighting, and views that honestly don’t feel real until you’re standing there.

As the day winds down, we head back onto the water to watch the sunset, unwind with our new friends, and soak in the calm, relaxed vibe before heading back.

This was one of those travel days that reminds you why you came.
