John Spencer is widely regarded as a leading authority on urban warfare. A former infantry soldier with over 25 years of service in the U.S. Army, he has advised military forces around the world and currently serves as Chair of Urban Warfare Studies at the Modern War Institute at West Point.

He is also the co-founder and executive director of the Urban Warfare Institute, a nonprofit dedicated to advancing the study of urban environments, operations and warfare, and the host of the Urban Warfare Project Podcast.

John is the author of three books including “Connected Soldiers: Life, Leadership, and Social Connections in Modern War,” and his analysis has appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, Foreign Policy, Newsweek and more.
