In World War II, my Dad was a member of the famed All-Black 10th Cavalry Regiment known as the Buffalo Soldiers. Contrary to popular belief that the Indians compared the Black Soldiers to buffalos because of their skin color and hair texture, the actual reason was that the Black Soldiers of the 9th and 10th Cavalry Regiments fought with the tenacity of the buffalo. Buffalo's were such fierce warriors, a special gun was developed to use against them, the Sharps.
Anyway, as I was researching Black military units for Inspired, Not Retired, not even our National Archives held very much information. Wikipedia was a primary source along with various colleges and universities in the south. This is important because African Americans have fought for the nation since the American Revolution. Black military history is also American military history, should be recognized as such, and I hope this short audio clip from the Inspired, Not Retired Audiobook provides some insight. #research #military #blackmilitaryhistory
