In the bail hearing of accused Shailesh Babulal Bhatt, the Supreme Court made strong observations in connection with the alleged Bitcoin and money-laundering racket. The Court earlier described the alleged illegal Bitcoin trade as a “refined way of doing Hawala business”. Taking the matter a step further, the Supreme Court has identified Dhaval Mavani as the “kingpin” of the Bitcoin game and sought a clear explanation from the ED and the State of Gujarat as to why Dhaval Mavani has not been arrested so far, despite being projected as the principal player in the alleged operation. When the case was listed on 22.01.2026, the ED continued to press for arrest and cancellation of protection granted to the accused. However, the Supreme Court declined the request, noting that the accused is cooperating with the investigation, while simultaneously questioning the selective approach in enforcement.
