During one of my visits to Chandlai Lake, I spotted this handsome and charming jacana foraging in a small roadside pond. Calm yet alert, it moved effortlessly across floating vegetation, searching for insects and small aquatic life.

Jacanas are specially adapted for wetland life — their long toes and claws help distribute body weight, allowing them to walk on lily pads without sinking. These birds play an important role in the ecosystem by controlling insect populations and indicating the health of freshwater wetlands.

Such roadside ponds may look ordinary, but they serve as vital micro-habitats, offering food and shelter to birds like jacanas. Moments like these remind us how rich and alive our everyday landscapes truly are.
