Udo Shrine (Udo Jingu)
Located in Nichinan City, Miyazaki Prefecture, Udo Shrine is a rare and unique Shinto shrine with its main hall situated inside a sea cave on the cliffs of Cape Udo overlooking Hyuga-Nada.

Visitors must descend steep stone steps from the Tamabashi Bridge to reach the sea cave (marine erosion cave) nestled halfway down the cliff, 8.5 meters above sea level. This downward approach to the shrine, called a "Kudari Miya" (descending shrine), is an uncommon feature in Japan.

The shrine is also deeply connected to Japanese mythology as the setting of the story of *Yamasachihiko and Umisachihiko. The enshrined deity is the father of Emperor Jimmu, Japan's legendary first emperor.
