City leaders gathered Tuesday, Feb. 6, to celebrate the opening of the Residences at Water Square, a 25-story apartment building and Detroit’s first all-glass residential high-rise.

It has 500 units and the building is pet-friendly. It was built in just under two years on the former site of the Joe Louis Arena.

Mayor Mike Duggan said it’s a symbol of how far the city has come since its bankruptcy.

“You had a soon-to-be-abandoned hockey arena on this site, and the city in 2014, the idea of building a new high-rise? You think about what you had here at the time -- the David Whitney Building sat empty, the David Stott Building sat empty, the Book Building sat empty, the train station sat empty,” Duggan said. “In 2014, nobody was thinking that this site was going to have any kind of short-term value.”

Located on the former Joe Louis Arena site, The Residences Water Square high-rise development will combine apartment units, amenities and retail components for Detroit residents. The apartments are a 50/50 split between studios and one bedrooms.

The former Joe Louis Arena site on the Detroit River, now called Water Square, is set to welcome a new addition in the form of a 25-story, 600 room hotel. The Developer (Atwater and Second Associates, LLC) which includes Sterling Group as the principal, proposes this new hotel consisting of five (5) podium floors which include a ground floor restaurant, a lobby bar, two ballrooms, 50,000 sq ft of meeting rooms, swimming pool, spa and fitness area.

“to commit literary theft”
“present as new and original an idea or product derived from an existing source”

Stealing and theft are criminal, and to be clear, in some cases, plagiarism is a crime as well.

Law vs. Ethics
Whether or not an act of plagiarism rises to the level of a crime, plagiarism is ALWAYS unethical. It is fraudulent to pretend that you created an idea, or a set of wording, when you did not. It is fraudulent to claim that someone else’s work is your own. It’s even a form of fraud to claim that a school paper that you created for one class is an original piece of writing for another class.

Plagiarism is illegal in the US. That does not (necessarily) mean that you will go to jail for plagiarism.
