MetroTV, Independent churches in Kinshasa are now facing growing criticism over the commercialization of faith, with some churches reportedly asking for money in exchange for “blessings.” Footage taken on Monday showed congregants gathered at a church in Kalamu, listening intently to Pastor Marc Ngoyi's sermon on “Divine Sunday.” Pastor Ngoyi condemned the actions of pastors who seek wealth or financial survival by selling consecrated oil. He emphasized that “what belongs to God cannot be sold.” This phenomenon of “commercialization of faith” has created class divisions within the place of worship itself. Some congregants who have money can fulfill the priests' demands, while others, who cannot afford it, feel marginalized. Many churchgoers criticize the high cost of obtaining “healing,” which they believe should not be charged according to biblical teachings. Since October 2025, approximately 1,486 new churches have been registered in the country, reflecting a surge in the number of religious institutions, many of which operate with limited oversight.
