Moses, a central figure in the Abrahamic religions, is best known as the leader who liberated the Israelites from Egyptian slavery and delivered the Ten Commandments, foundational laws for Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Born during a time of oppression, Moses was saved from Pharaoh’s decree to kill Hebrew male infants when his mother placed him in a basket along the Nile. He was discovered and adopted by Pharaoh’s daughter, growing up in Egyptian royalty while remaining aware of his Hebrew heritage.
After killing an Egyptian overseer who was mistreating a Hebrew slave, Moses fled to Midian, where he lived as a shepherd. There, he encountered God in the form of a burning bush and received the divine mission to lead his people to freedom. Returning to Egypt, Moses confronted Pharaoh, demanding the Israelites’ release. Through a series of ten devastating plagues, Pharaoh finally relented, allowing Moses to guide the Israelites out of Egypt in the miraculous Exodus, including the iconic parting of the Red Sea.
During their journey through the wilderness, Moses received the Ten Commandments on Mount Sinai, solidifying his role as a lawgiver and prophet. Though he led his people to the edge of the Promised Land, Moses himself never entered it, passing away at 120 years old, leaving a lasting legacy of faith, leadership, and justice.
