Many bulbs divide naturally. Once you have a planted a single flower bulb it will flower in the spring or summer. After flowering and once it has used the energy stored in the bulb the leaves use photosynthesis to put food back into a new bulb.
The new bulbs will be anchored to the basal plate, where the roots originate. After the bulb's foliage has turned brown you can lift the bulbs and pull the new bulbs apart to replant around the garden.
Many bulbs form clumps this way. lifting every 2-3 years helps keep your display from looking tired.
Snowdrops
alliums
Daffodils
Camassia
Crinum
Crocosmia
are just some of the bulbs you can do this with.
Pulling the roots apart will not hurt the bulb. Providing there are roots on each new bulb and the body of the bulb is firm and full they will be ok to replant.
Often you will get a lot of small bulbs that will be too small to replant. It is only worth saving the biggest of the bulbs. You can replant the small ones but they may take a long time to grow to full size. https://www.peternyssen.com
