Released in 1975 "Another Man's Family", is an adaptation of a film produced by the U.S. Air Force and released by the National Fire Prevention Association. This dramatization is based on a real-life incident in which a father caused the accidental death of himself and his family when he left a burning cigarette on a sofa. What could the family have done to save their lives?

0:00 Host discusses the difficulty of "selling" safety and fire prevention, stating that it won't deliver a sermon but aims to demonstrate that fire is a "cunning and malicious enemy." It suggests that carelessness by "that other guy" can lead to injury of loved ones, loss of business, or the death of valuable employees.2:13 The story, based on a true incident, focuses on a young military family, the Turners, living in a house near a military installation.3:37 Capt. Turner leaves for work, saying goodbye to his wife and two children, and the dog.4:10 In real life, crises and climaxes are not easily recognized, and people often act without a "script."5:08 Captain Turner, a safe driver who learned from a near-fatal car crash, understands how to act in traffic, but the film questions if he will learn about fire prevention the hard way.5:46 The film discusses the recognition of fire hazards, noting that people believe in visible hazards but often overlook concealed risks, such as matches and lighted cigarettes, which are the two greatest causes of fire incidents due to custom dulling awareness.7:55 Home is presented as a place of privacy without official supervision, where fire prevention is an "emotional attitude" and the ability to "see and feel proper respect for real danger." The film questions how June (the wife) will learn to recognize danger: through a film, a friend's tragedy, or bitter firsthand experience.9:26 The film highlights children's perspective of home as a refuge, contrasting it with their ignorance of fire and electrical hazards. It shows Dana, at six, with her radio in the bathroom, illustrating common adult ignorance of electrical risks.11:32 The morning progresses, and Captain Turner is shown at the base, busy with practical matters, briefly noticing a fire drill.13:04 Captain Turner arrives for lunch to find a fire in an adjacent barracks, caused by a night maintenance mechanic who fell asleep smoking in bed and died. A fireman callously remarks that the victim "lucked out" by dying quickly rather than suffering burns.13:44 The film emphasizes that smoking in bed is one of the chief causes of fire fatalities.14:02 The scene shifts to the family at home at night, feeling safe and relaxed.15:17 A public service message is inserted, advising families to plan and practice fire escape routes from every room, teaching children to escape immediately without gathering possessions.16:25 The family dog interacts with a cigarette left smoldering on the sofa, hinting at the fire's origin.18:43 The film explains that fires in sofas can smolder for hours, releasing lethal gases that suffocate occupants before open flames appear, preventing them from waking up.19:24 Once free, fire is incredibly swift, capable of gutting large buildings in 10 minutes and houses in 3-5 minutes. Heated lethal gases rise, filling the upper areas of a room, and can be just above a sleeping person by the time they awaken.22:05 A colonel and a fireman investigate the burned house. The fire started in the sofa from a smoldering cigarette. The father was found by the bedroom window, having risen and dropped, likely suffocated. The mother was on the floor, evidently trying to reach the children.23:01 In the children's bedroom, the boy died in his sleep in the top bunk. The little girl almost made it to the front door, found in the living room, because she was used to exiting through doors and didn't think to use the window.23:28 The film concludes with the tragic realization of the "terrible price to pay" for fire hazards, repeating the phrase "Here it is" over images of the devastated home.

Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. For almost two decades, we've worked to collect, scan and preserve the world as it was captured on 35mm, 16mm and 8mm movies -- including home movies, industrial films, and other non-fiction. If you have endangered films you'd like to have scanned, or wish to donate celluloid to Periscope Film so that we can share them with the world, we'd love to hear from you.
