Castell Caergwrle (also known as arywrle Castle or Hope Castle) is a 13th-coy ruined fortress in Flintshire, Wales. Notably, it was the last castle to be built by a native Welsh prince before the loss of Welsh independence in 1283.
History
Construction: The castle was built between 1277 and 1282 by Dafydd ap Gruffudd, the younger brother of Prince Llywelyn ap Gruffudd. It was constructed on a site that likely held an earlier Iron Age hillfort.
Conflict: In 1282, Dafydd launched an attack from the castle on the English garrison at Hawarden, sparking King Edward I's second Welsh campaign.
English Control: After Dafydd retreated, the castle was taken by English forces. King Edward I gave the castle to his wife, Eleanor of Castile, in 1283.
Destruction: Only months after the English took control, a catastrophic fire in August 1283 destroyed the residential buildings. It was never fully repaired and was recorded as ruinous by 1335.
