June and Jennifer Gibbons were twin sisters who grew up in Wales and became known as "The Silent Twins" because they only communicated with each other. They wrote works of fiction and committed several crimes in 1981, leading to their admission to Broadmoor Hospital. The twins were sentenced to indefinite detention under the Mental Health Act of 1983 and were held for 11 years. During their time at Broadmoor, they were placed on high doses of antipsychotic medications, which affected their ability to concentrate and their interest in creative writing. The twins had a longstanding agreement that if one died, the other must begin to speak and live a normal life. In March 1993, Jennifer agreed that she would be the one to make the sacrifice for June to lead a normal life.
