India's economy is highly dependent on its agricultural sector and the hard work of its farmers. But the life of the average farmer in India is harrowing at best. He doesn't have access to good seeds, his land is wrecked by poor infrastructure and irregular weather (floods and drought) and he often becomes an easy target for greedy middlemen and predatory money-lenders, leaving him poor and desperate. This is why the growing rate of farmer suicides is one of India's most alarming human development issues. The agriculture crisis in India affects the whole country, from rising food prices to restrictions on the use of water and it is an issue that should be at the top of the Government's to-do list.
