Walstad Stocking Ideas: 6 Beginner-Friendly Fish For The Walstad Method!

Choosing the right fish for a Walstad Method aquarium is extremely important, and it’s also one of the areas where many people make mistakes. Because this method relies on a layered soil substrate, it’s usually best to avoid fish that dig or constantly disturb the bottom of the tank. Species like corydoras and certain cichlids can mix the soil layer into the water column, which can cause problems in this type of setup.

Another thing worth thinking about when stocking a Walstad tank is hardiness. Many popular aquarium fish have developed genetic weaknesses after decades of selective breeding and inbreeding, which can make them less resilient to changes in water conditions. Since new Walstad tanks can occasionally experience small parameter swings while plants establish and the ecosystem stabilises, choosing hardy species can make a big difference.

In this video I go through several fish species that I’ve personally kept for over a year and a half, all of which have proven to be resilient, easy to care for, and well suited to planted aquariums with natural substrates.

Some of the species covered include Honey Gourami, which come from the Brahmaputra river system where water conditions fluctuate heavily throughout the year due to monsoon seasons. This natural adaptability, combined with their love of dense plant cover, makes them an excellent choice for Walstad aquariums.

I also discuss Medaka Rice Fish, which behave in many ways like hardier guppies. They are easy to breed, come in a wide range of colours, and research has shown they have an unusually high tolerance to inbreeding compared to many other fish species.

For nano fish options, Chili Rasboras and Celestial Pearl Danios are both fantastic choices. These small schooling fish stay around the upper areas of the tank, rarely interact with the substrate, and look incredible in heavily planted aquariums where their colours contrast against the greenery.

I also cover Harlequin Rasboras, one of the most consistently hardy aquarium fish I’ve kept, and White Cloud Mountain Minnows, which are widely regarded as one of the toughest species in the hobby and can even be kept in cooler room-temperature aquariums.
