British men are testing the world's first hormone-free male contraceptive pill, called YCT-529. Unlike the female pill, it doesn't use hormones; instead, it blocks access to vitamin A to prevent sperm production. If successful, this daily pill could promote fair sharing of contraception responsibility between men and women.
Previous attempts at male birth control, which suppressed testosterone, were less effective and had complications. The new hormone-free pill is inspired by studies dating back almost 100 years, showing that depriving animals of vitamin A can lead to infertility.
