This video tutorial shows how to calculate the gross-section yielding and net-section rupture (i.e., fracture) of steel sections in tension. We discuss the difference between gross area, net area, and effective area, compute shear lag factors, and find which of these two limit states controls. This is the first in an upcoming series on steel design, so stay tuned!
