WHAT ARE THE SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF BAD BMW BRAKE ROTORS OR PADS?
Just like there are common brake issues, there are very noticeable signs that can indicate the cause of a brake problem. Warning signs include a shaky steering wheel, trouble stopping or a loud metal scraping sound are all indicators that you need to check your BMW brakes. However, there are many other, and less obvious, indicators that your BMW brakes may be showing which you don’t want to ignore.
When do I need to get my brakes inspected? Schedule your appointment with Nalley BMW of Decatur if you experience any of the following:
The brake pedal presses farther to the floor than normal or seems light or loose, and even requires more force/pressure than usual
It’s been over a year or 12,000 miles. Brake inspections should be at least once a year. (Nalley BMW of Decatur offers a complimentary multi-point inspection every visit)
You are over the number of miles that BMW recommends between brake fluid exchanges for your vehicle
Your car is wobbling or rocking when driving at higher speeds
It takes your vehicle longer distances to stop than normal
You have grinding, squeaking or squealing brakes
Your vehicle doesn't stay straight when you brake, pulling in either direction
Unusual vibrations, shaking or noises occur during braking
Your Check Engine or Brake Warning Light on your dashboard comes on

I know thre is other ones doing the round but here is my
two cents worth
Brake pad and/or brake disc replacement on the E39
The day comes around that this symbol lights up on the right hand side of your dash.
This means two things
1.Your brake pads need to be replaced.
2Your car is fitted with a brake pad sensor, which I’ll get to latter.
First off all your going to need tools and bits and bobs to carry
out the job.
You will need.
1.A Ratchet, extension, 18mm socket, 7mm Allen key bit,
6mm Allen key, long nose pliers, snips, mallet,
impact screw driver, Trolley jack, axel stands, G clamp,
wire brush and your wheel brace from tool kit in the boot.
2. You will need other things too. Brake fluid,
Copper grease, WD40, New brake pads, new brake discs,
new brake pad sensors, Cable ties and or a budge strap.

1. Ok so you’ve got the bits you need. Now its time to get to work
Park the car on level ground, applies the hand brake.
crack open the wheel nuts on the wheel your first going to be taking off,
Jack up the front of the car, I would do the drivers side
first as there isn’t the sensor to deal with on this side.
Loosen the wheel nuts and remove the wheels.
Once the wheel is off you will be able
to see the brake assemble.
2. Now open the bonnet, on the left hand side of the engine
you will find the pollen filter enclosure, you need to remove it.
Release the metal clip (marked A) at the front of the
enclosure and lift the cover off. This will reveal the
pollen filter, remove it also. The duct (marked B) that
leaves the enclosure and heads toward the cabin of
the car or the bulkhead has to come off too. It’s
clipped into the enclose with three clip on top of it,
undo them and turn the whole thing clockwise
this will release it from the bulkhead. Now
undo the wire clip (marked C) at the front of the enclosure.
