Micro-Metal 9mm Pistols, S&W CSX versus SIG’s P938 Legion
Why are predominantly metal pistols still around if polymer pistols are so popular?
Because some of us still like the sculptured look that metal can provide, and some of us like the feel of metal in our hands.
We recently tested two great examples of metal pocket pistols.
The SIG P938, introduced in 2011, is one of the most recent SIG Sauer models to be upgraded to the “Legion” nameplate.

Introduced in 2022, the Smith & Wesson CSX adds to the company's pocket-pistol choices.

In our pistol tests, our basic range gear includes a LabRadar,
a Caldwell Pistol Rest,
and a mini-DRC fortune-cookie bag from Wiebad.com.
For ammo, we used Remington 115-grain FMJs, Winchester 115-grain FMJs, and SIG Sauer 115-grain V-Crown self-defense rounds.
Here's what we thought about these guns in more detail.
Though the disassembly procedures are different, both pistols break down into the same sub-assemblies.
Left to right are the front sights for the S&W CSX and the SIG P938 Legion. We gave the SIG a slight advantage for including a night sight. That could also account for the bulk of the two pistols’ price differences.
All the edges and corners were properly melted on the P938, as they should be on a good pocket pistol.
S&W also did a great job on smoothing the CSX’s contact edges.
The manual thumb safety on the CSX extends a bit farther forward than on the P938, making it easier to reach and manipulate.
The magwell on the P938 made reloads very easy and provided a little extra room for larger hands.
S&W provides a true left-handed magazine catch (detached, arrow) with the CSX. It fits into the hole in the frame (arrow).
The SIG’s mainspring housing, grip panels, and front strap all provide checkering needed to hold onto this pocket rocket.
There’s even a bit of texture on the bottom side of the trigger guard.
We think that S&W got the texture on the CSX grip panels just right.
The CSX provides two sizes of backstraps that are easily changed to fit different hands.
To make the change, just use the included tool to depress the stud in the bottom of the grip and remove the panel.
Overall, the P938 was the clear accuracy winner. We also liked the SIG’s luminous green night sights.
The CSX did well in the shooting drills, but it just didn’t group as well as the SIG.
So what did our shooters think of these guns?
Small, dehorned, fairly accurate and festooned with the Legion logo, this P938 would do well for the shooter who likes precision and panache. We gave it an A- grade, and it was Our Pick between these two handguns if price isn't a consideration.
We liked several of the features offered in the CSX, with magazine capacity being a big one. But it was less accurate than the SIG. If you want a pistol that more easily accommodates different hand sizes and shapes, our top choice could be the CSX.
