Gaudete has the unique position of being the most well-known Christmas carol still sung in Latin.

With an origin beloved to be the 16th century, and published in 1582 in a collection of Finnish and Swedish sacred songs, the Piae Cantiones.

Originally the music was printed without music and the melody in use now most likely comes from the late medieval era, and harmonies added in the 15th century.
