Double Thick Slippers part 1

Описание: Popularly called Romeos, because they resemble the old mens’ Romeo slippers. This is a very old pattern. It was originally part of my book, Knitting for Bazaars and Gifts, published in 1988, and was made using every other needle on a standard gauge knitting machine. Knitting worsted weight yarn was a little thinner back then, averaging 20 sts, 28 rows per 4”/10 cm, or 5 sts, 7 rows per inch. There are still some yarns that knit to that gauge, and most of them can be knitted on a standard gauge machine, using every other needle. I have found wool yarns tend to work better for this, but you could certainly experiment.

By the 1990s, bulky and midgauge knitting machines were becoming more available, and this pattern works well on any of them, using every needle. Bulky/chunky machines will take thicker/stiffer yarns than the midgauge models. Red Heart Super Saver, and most other “super saver” yarns seem to be ones most people want to use, and they are sturdy enough to make good slippers. However, some of them are too thick and stiff for midgauge machines. Some of them will knit OK, and some, even in the same brand will not. Thickness and stiffness is not consistent. They usually knit well on metal bed bulky machines. Before purchasing a large amount, get just one skein and see how your machine does with it. Just remember, while one color may knit on your midgauge, another one in the same brand may not.

This is a slipper inside a slipper. It is shaped with short rows…a lot of short rows. You will actually be knitting six pockets, one on top of the other, and you definitely need weights. The straight part of the foot, on both inner and outer sides, is joined by sew-as-you-go method, and the slipper is almost finished when it comes off the machine. What is left is grafting the cast on edge to the top edge, then closing up the little holes on each side that are caused by stretching from all the layers of fabric.

In this video, part 1, I will cover approximately half of the construction, including casting on, short rowing a heel and toe, and sew-as you-go along the sides of the foot between heel and toe.
