RTP Festival Committee organized Devi Navratri (2012) Celebrations starting from 16-10-2012 to 24-10-2012. Everyday Navratri Puja was performed during evening by Puja sub-committee. Last day i.e. on 24-10-2012 the Jammi Puja or Shami Puja has been performed. Shami Puja also known as Banni Puja or Jammi Puja is a ritual observed on Vijaya Dashami (Dasara) in all places of India.There is a popular legend in Mahabharata that explains the significance of Shami Puja.
After getting cheated by Kauravas, Pandavas had to go for exile. For that they need to hide their weapons at secure place. They opted a Shami tree for that and hid their weapons on that tree. When they came back from exile their weapons are safe at Shami Tree. To express their gratitude they performed a puja to Shami Tree and their weapons. Since then it has become a custom to perform Shami Puja and Ayudha (Weapon) Puja on Vijayadashami.
