Tour du Rwanda 2025: Records, Milestones, and Notable Riders
The 17th edition of the Tour du Rwanda, a UCI 2.1 category race for the sixth consecutive year since its upgrade in 2019, kicks off with a prologue at Amahoro Stadium on Sunday, February 23.
Individual Record Breakers
Over the years, the Tour du Rwanda has witnessed extraordinary achievements, with Rwanda’s Patrick Byukusenge joining Jean-Bosco Nsengimana as the record-holder for most participations (12 editions).
In terms of stage victories, Colombia’s Jhonatan Restrepo leads with seven wins. Among the most experienced riders in this year’s race, Eritrea’s Metkel Eyob stands out with 11 participations, followed by Eric Manizabayo (8), Moïse Mugisha (7), and Didier Munyaneza (7).
Speed records have also been set, with the fastest average speed for an entire edition recorded at 40.46 km/h (2024) and the fastest road race stage reaching 49.57 km/h during the Kigali-Kigali stage (2012).
Additionally, 30 riders have transitioned from the Tour du Rwanda to World Tour teams, reinforcing the race’s role as a key talent incubator.
Eritrea holds the record for most stage wins in Tour du Rwanda history (26 victories), followed by Rwanda (20), France (12), South Africa (10), and Colombia (10), with Morocco also ranking among the top-performing nations.
This year’s race sees strong national representation, with:
Rwanda leading the way with 14 riders
Eritrea (9)
Ethiopia (8)
France and Belgium (6 each)
Historically, Rwanda has dominated participation, with 240 riders since 2009, followed by France (105), Eritrea (102), South Africa (81), and Ethiopia (68).
For the first time, Greece joins the race, expanding the peloton’s diversity to 20 nationalities. Additionally, three new teams make their debut:
Development Team Picnic-PostNL (Netherlands)
Team Amani (Rwanda)
Angola National Team
Meanwhile, Rwanda, France, and South Africa remain the only countries to have participated in every edition since 2019.
