Ankola, Uttara Kannada:
A complete shutdown was observed in Ankola town on Tuesday as thousands of residents staged a massive protest against the proposed commercial port project at Keni. The project, awarded to JSW under a government tender, has sparked widespread public anger over environmental and livelihood concerns.
From early morning, major roads, markets, and business establishments across the town remained closed in support of the bandh call given by anti-port activists. A large number of local residents, members of various organisations, environmental groups, and students took part in rallies and sit-in demonstrations, turning the town into a centre of intense agitation.
Key Demands of the Protesters
• Immediate scrapping of the proposed Keni Commercial Port project
• Government action to protect the coastal ecological balance
• Reconsideration of the project, which locals allege was approved without consulting residents whose livelihoods will be affected
Protesters marched through the town shouting slogans such as “No to Keni Port,” “Save the Coast,” and “Listen to the People.”
The JSW commercial port proposal has been under intense scrutiny for its potential environmental impact, with local communities and activists consistently opposing it over the past months.
To maintain law and order, additional police forces were deployed across the town. Officials confirmed that despite the high turnout, the bandh remained peaceful.
