In this second lecture, we observe the way in which in part 1 of Till We Have Faces C.S. Lewis weaves the motifs of sacrifice, the light of reasoning, with those of 'faces' and 'voices'. The revelation implicit in the latter is what the old queen Orual claims she lacks. She charges the gods with injustice and, worst of all, with silence. The bitterness of a thwarted, selfish love is what drives the Queen to write her complaint against all the gods. It is her word of testimony against their silence.
Part 2 will be a later reflection on how wrong-headed and inaccurate her charges actually were. Using the template of The Great Divorce, it is as if part 1 were written from the vantage of an inhabitant of the grey city when taking the 'refrigerium' of a day's holiday in Heaven. Rather than seeing Heaven for the place of reality and joy that it is, Orual finds it inhospitable and empty, and she is filled with contempt for it.
