Before heading out, you’ll need a permit from GMUG National Forests (Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre & Gunnison) — available on Recreation.gov. Permits help manage forest health by thinning denser stands — so cutting your own tree is actually helping the land.

If you go: dress warm, bring a saw (manual or battery-powered), gloves, snow-ready boots, a tape measure, rope or straps for transport, and a tarp or soft surface to protect needles when you haul your tree.
