Tens of thousands of Syrians are marking one year of Syria without Bashar al Assad. A year ago, on 8th December, a group of fighters under the leadership of Ahmed Alsharaa seized the capital Damascus, bringing an end to more than 13 years of civil war that killed hundreds of thousands of people, displaced millions and left cities in ruins. While the country's development statistics may seem dire right now, Syrians are optimistic about a transition under the new government, with fears of a return to authoritarianism easing. Now that he is president, Ahmed Alsharaa has made strides in his global outreach, successfully convincing international partners to lift sanctions and support rebuilding. Yet domestically it is still a complex picture, with issues such as sectarian violence threatening internal efforts to rebuild the state.
