Probably the final part on these trees for a while.....this video was filmed in the summer and shows a tree I grafted around late march 2019. It grew through 2019 and now has grown in 2020, so essentially it is in it's second year. You can see it has formed some nice laterals and would make a nice open centre tree.
When I have been reading about pruning trees I often found it hard to visualise how to prune for an open centre and a central leader so hopefully this may help some people out there.
I spoke in a previous video about "topping", that is cutting the central stem of the tree, in order to develop lateral growth. When the tree is in it's first year of growth I have tried topping them but my experience (and having read a little on the topic) is that when you prune the soft fresh wood in it's first year you will get some laterals from the vigorous trees but these laterals come off the crunch at a less an ideal angle. i.e they come off at a very steep angle close to the vertical, this makes them weaker than laterals that come off closer at much larger angles, say between 45 and 90 degrees (as opposed to less than 45). My understanding is that if you prune in the first winter then the laterals that grow in the following spring will come off at that better and more desirable angle.
take it easy
