Lesson Notes:
Marḥaba … Welcome to Arabic with Ibtisam
In this lesson you’ll learn how to introduce yourselves in Arabic.
Are you ready?
Let’s start with introducing your name:
My name is Ibtisam = ismi Ibtisam اسمي ابتسام
My name = ismi
Name = isem
The last I in ismi is for my. ismi
ismi Ibtisam My name is Ibtisam
By the way Ibtisam means smile, so you are getting Arabic lessons with a smile.
When you’re asking others about their name. If you’re asking a male you say, shu ismak?
Shu = what
Ismak = your name (m)
shu ismak? What’s your name?
Your answer, ismi Alex, ismi Michael
When asking a female about her name, you say:
shu ismek?
Shu = what
Ismek = your name (f)
shu ismek? What’s you name (f)
The answer is ismi Sara, ismi Mary… ismi sandra
When people tell us their names, we say tsharrafna, which means honored to meet you. tsharrafna
Well, it’s good to know that Arabs are well known for using lots of complements. So, when you say a complement there’s always more than an answer to it.
When we say tsharrafna the answer is:
w ilan isrhaaf = we’re honored as well or
w ihna bilaktar = we’re even more honored
Now let’s learn how we say where we come from
I’m from Nazareth = ana min innasre
ana = I
min = from
innasre = Nazareth
ana min innasre
I’m from Nazareth
Where are you from? = min wain inte (m)?
min = from
wain = where
inte = you (m)
min wain inte (m)?
min wain inti (f)
min = from
wain = where
inti = you (f)
the answer is the same for (m) or (f)
ana min America, ana min Canada, ana min Italia, ana min Australia
Hope this lesson was useful for you, try to practice it with people that might know Arabic around you.
