For more than a decade now, the movement has been trying to get people to flush their toilet paper away. But some people still throw the paper in the trash instead. The main concerns are blocked pipes and expensive repairs. But plumbers say the key to whether flushing TP could be problematic is the force of the flush and the pipe layout. Let’s hear more.

Toilet paper can usually be flushed. For tissue paper, you should check the label first, to see if it can disintegrate in water. Even if it is labeled as water-soluble, it can still cause a blockage if you flush too much of it in one go. Toilets can also get clogged if the piping is horizontal, or if the horizontal drain pipe is too long.

Toilet paper is made of short fibers, which makes it break down quickly when it comes into contact with water to avoid any blockages. Flushing it down reduces the amount of trash, and helps contain the spread of bacteria and contagious diseases. But tissue paper meant for the face is not water soluble and should be thrown in the trash, unless you want to end up with a clogged toilet and a pricy plumber’s bill.
