Developed at one of the biggest turning points in the history of video games—at the dawn of 3D gaming—Squaresoft and Hironobu Sakaguchi created one of the most ambitious and cinematic stories the series had seen up until that time. Moving the game into 3D and breaking off their long-time partnership with Nintendo to go all in on the PlayStation 1, Final Fantasy VII wasn’t just a best-selling game; it was a cultural phenomenon.

In this deep dive, we’ll be looking at the history and development of Final Fantasy VII and examining the various forces that came into play there, dissecting the story, characters, and themes, and examining how they combined to tell a tale that captured millions of players all over the world, turned the series into an international success, popularized JRPGs around the world, and made Square into an industry powerhouse.
