Ryan: Hey everybody, Ryan here at etrailer.com. Today on our 2012 GMC Sierra, we're going to be taking a look at and showing you how to install the Curt class three, two inch trailer hitch receiver.Now one of my favorite things about this hitch is the way it looks. And that's kind of what sets it apart from some of the other hitches on the market too. I really like how our safety chain openings are sloped down and in my opinion, it just gives it kind of a neat look.One of the other thing that separates this hitch from any of the others, is it has a really heavy duty weight capacity. The maximum gross tongue weight rating for the hitch, it's going to be 800 pounds. That's going to be the amount of weight pushing down on our hitch.

For the maximum gross trailer weight rating, that's going to be 8,000 pounds. So the amount of weight that's pulling on our hitch. That'll be the weight of your trailer plus anything you might have on it.Now this can be used with the weight distribution system, which is a separate component. But if you choose to use that, your weight capacities do increase. The maximum tongue weight rating goes up to 1,200 pounds and the maximum gross trailer weight rating goes up to 12,000 pounds.

Now it is always a good idea to check with your truck's owners manual to make sure your GMC can pull that much weight.Now this is a class three hitch. So it's going to have that two inch by two inch receiver tube opening. It's going to have a reinforced collar for extra strength. It's going to have the standard 5/8" size pin hole. Keep in mind it does not come with the pin and clip.

But if you need one, you can pick one up here at etrailer.com.The safety chain openings are a plate style and they are angled down, which is going to give you a ton of room to use just about any size hook that you might have. Now many times at our connection point, you're going to get a little shake and play and rattle. Now if you're looking to eliminate that, I'd recommend the Let's Go Aero anti-rattle locking hitch pin. What that does is it's going to eliminate any slack that we have in our connection point, give you that secure fit. It's also going to have a lock on it, that way whatever you choose to put in the receiver tune is going to stay there because it is locked.

The hitch is going to have a nice, thick, gloss black finish. And it's also going to allow us to reuse our spare tire without having to modify or have it interfere with anything.Now I'm going to give you a couple of measurements. These are going to help you when determine which hitch mounted accessories to use. From the ground to the top inside edge of the receiver tube opening, it's about 18 inches. You're going to use that measurement to figure out whether you need to get a ball mount with either a drop or rise. From the center of the hitch pin hole to the edge of our rear bumper, that's about three inches. That's going to help you when figuring out if any folding accessories you might have can be stored in the upright position without making contact with our bumper.Now the hitch is going to be a straightforward installation. Speaking of which, let's go ahead and do it together now. To begin our installation, I went ahead and removed our spare tire and set it off to the side. Now on the bottom of our frame rail here, along this area. If you have any factory hardware in place, you're going to want to go ahead and remove that.I'd just like to point out where our attachment points are going to be that's going to hold our hitch up in place. We're going to have three, that'll be the same on each side. One will be here, one will be here, and the other one will be back here by this large hole. One of the things I like to do with these attachment points closest to the back bumper, since they are threaded, I like to clean those threads out. So to do that I sprayed it with some penetrating oil and I'll use a tube brush.Now before we put our hitch up into place, we can get some of our hardware ready and I can show you what hardware we're going to be using for each hole. For the large hole close to the front of the truck, we're going to grab one of our bolts and one of the big spacer blocks, slide that through like that. Now once we have the hitch on, we're going to put one of the smaller spacer blocks on, a split lock washer, and then finally a nut.Now the next hole is going to be a little bit different.
