In response to further queries, (for which, my humble thanks) I'm attempting to demonstrate how I have developed my version of this song and accompaniment pulling the melody out of the three/four chords.
This song is by Guy Clark/Shawn Camp and was released on Guy's Album "the Dark" in 2002.

And here is my version wtih Mando Bob and Ian the bass, filmed in 2017 - a few days before my throat cancer treatment started - as you see, I was somewhat more "cuddly" back then, and, of course, my voice was so much better.
