India's gems and jewellery industry is a big part of our economy, contributing about 7% to our GDP. It provides jobs for over five million people and is a major exporter, making up about 15.71% of all our exports. Even though growth has slowed recently, exports reached USD 29.61 billion.
The Indian government is working hard to support this sector by helping businesses, exploring new markets, and promoting 'Made in India' products. We export many items, including cut and polished diamonds, synthetic diamonds, coloured gemstones, and gold and silver jewellery.
The Western region of India, especially Surat in Gujarat, is a leading centre for jewellery making, contributing nearly 75% of our exports. India is a top exporter globally, especially in cut and polished diamonds, silver jewellery, and synthetic stones.
The government aims to increase exports to USD 75 billion and is providing support through new policies and financial help. The Gems and Jewellery Export Promotion Council is also working to promote Indian jewellery around the world. This sector is crucial to the 'Made in India' campaign, showing the world the quality and skill of Indian craftsmanship.
