On the first anniversary of his inauguration, former US President Donald Trump reiterated America’s intention to acquire Greenland, citing the case of Diego Garcia as a national security justification. Trump criticised the United Kingdom for agreeing to transfer sovereignty of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius, arguing that such moves signal strategic weakness that could be exploited by China and Russia. Diego Garcia, a key US–UK military base in the Indian Ocean, has played a critical role in American operations from the Gulf War to post-9/11 missions and is strategically located near vital sea lanes like the Malacca Strait. The sovereignty transfer follows long-standing international pressure, including UN and ICJ opinions that Britain’s control over the Chagos Islands was not legally valid. While the deal allows the Diego Garcia base to remain operational for 99 years, Trump’s remarks reflect broader US concerns about maintaining strategic dominance amid rising geopolitical competition in both the Indo-Pacific and Arctic regions.
