Looking for an inspirational story of local action? Look no further than the City of Ann Arbor, MI and the Community Action Network (CAN) of Ann Arbor who are taking care of neighbors and helping them live safer, healthier, and more affordable lives through innovative energy work.
They're transforming their community center and food shelter as well as Bryant's 262 homes with solar energy, geothermal heating and cooling, battery storage, new windows and electric appliances, and more—overcoming the many issues of old energy infrastructure, frequent power outages, and drafty and sometimes dangerous homes for residents who are often on fixed incomes and spend large portions of their income on energy expenses.
The groundbreaking collaborative efforts of Krystal Steward, Derrick Miller, Melissa (Missy) Stults (and their entire teams and many partners) are helping growing families like the Glassons care for future generations and elders like Deborah Pulk age in place safely and comfortably.
Ann Arbor has been successful stitching together philanthropic, state, and federal funding to make their ambitious vision a reality. “With bold, strategic investments, we can multiply successes like Ann Arbor across thousands of cities in the Midwest and the country," shared McKnight's Ben Passer. "We can build the capacity of diverse, local actors to absorb and deploy new capital while making the Midwest a global hub for innovation and the rapid, equitable implementation of climate solutions.”
Ann Arbor stands alongside major global cities in season two of the Transforming Cities series that launched recently during London Climate Action Week. Our new film was created by BBC StoryWorks with much care by Laura Abrahams and their entire team and Voyage Pictures, in collaboration with C40 Cities.
