Why do so many RPG fans still love games from 30+ years ago, games like The Bard’s Tale, Ultima, Chrono Trigger, or the old SSI “Gold Box” games? There’s something about those classics that still feels magical, even today. While building a new authentic 8-bit RPG, we’ve rediscovered how limitations can drive creativity and once again give players access to the most powerful technology of all: their imagination. This talk explores what made old-school RPGs so memorable, why it's more than just nostalgia, and how leaving room for the player’s imagination can inspire fresh innovations in RPG design today.
