"Imagine building your own acoustic map of human speech with our ""Vowel Pronunciation Acoustic Simulation Device""! This exhibit is a multidisciplinary STEM education platform at the Science Museum, integrating linguistics, acoustic physics, and physiology. It employs five sophisticated airbag-vocal tract simulation systems, corresponding to the physiological models of the five standard vowels: a, o, e, i, and u. When visitors press the rubber stopper, airflow passes through simulated vocal cords (elastic membranes), generating a fundamental frequency. The airflow then enters an adjustable-shaped ""oral cavity"" (transparent tube). By changing the cross-sectional area and length of the tube, the unique formant frequency distribution of different vowels is reproduced. Combined with a real-time spectrum analyzer displaying a dynamic spectrum of F1-F3 formants, the exhibit visually reveals the quantitative correlation between tongue position, lip rounding, and vowel acoustic characteristics.
This device serves as a multi-sensory cognitive vehicle for STEM education in speech science at the Science Museum, deeply integrating sound source-filter theory, vocal tract transmission line models, and the physiological mechanisms of speech production. Visitors can not only understand the acoustic spatial distribution of vowel triangles by comparing five sets of devices, but also attempt to design non-standard vocal tract configurations to synthesize special vowels in the science museum's unique ""Speech Engineer"" challenge. The system will predict formant patterns based on the vocal tract area function and conduct acoustic verification using a high-precision microphone, deepening their scientific understanding of speech synthesis, speech pathology, and language evolution mechanisms.
This exhibit is specifically designed for the science museum's speech science exhibition area, cognitive science education corner, and STEM education interdisciplinary laboratory. Through a three-dimensional experimental path of ""airflow drive - vocal tract adjustment - spectrum analysis,"" it systematically stimulates young people's scientific interest in speech acoustics, language physiology, and artificial intelligence speech technology, cultivating interdisciplinary inquiry abilities based on acoustic modeling and experimental verification.
