Corporal punishment remains a pervasive issue in schools and homes across India and globally, normalized as a way to discipline children. But does hitting or physical punishment truly teach children to learn and grow?
This short film, 'Maarna Nahi Hai Solution,' challenges the harmful practice of corporal punishment.

Corporal punishment is defined under Indian laws as any physical punishment or mental harassment inflicted on a child to discipline them. Despite being banned in India under the Right to Education Act (2009) and globally in over 60 countries, it continues to be practiced widely. Research shows that such punishment is not only ineffective but also detrimental to a child’s well-being and development.
What Constitutes Corporal Punishment? Under Indian laws, corporal punishment includes:
Physical acts such as hitting, slapping, or spanking Making a child stand in painful positions
Denying meals as punishment
Mental harassment, including verbal abuse or humiliation
(Source: National Commission for Protection of Child Rights)
Studies reveal that corporal punishment can have devastating effects on children, including: Increased anxiety and depression
Trauma
Lower self-esteem
Poor academic performance Long-term behavioral issues
According to UNICEF, over 80% of children aged 2–14 years are subjected to corporal punishment at home globally. (UNICEF Report)
In a survey conducted by the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights, 65% of children reported being punished physically in schools. (NCPCR Study)
Laws Protecting Children in India
Right to Education Act (2009): Bans corporal punishment in schools.
Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act (2015): Prohibits cruelty to children. Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act (2012): Protects children from all
forms of abuse, including mental harassment. (Refer to Ministry of Law and Justice)
What Parents and Teachers Need to Understand:
Children learn through guidance, empathy, and positive reinforcement, not fear or physical punishment. Adults must:
Recognize the emotional and psychological damage caused by corporal punishment. Adopt alternative methods of discipline that promote understanding and mutual respect. Create an environment where children feel safe to express themselves.
