Bala Fanga is a collective of West African musicians based in New York City that specializes in balafon music from Mali and Guinea. Under the direction of djelis and balafon virtuosos, Balla Kouyate and
Famoro Dioubaté, Bala Fanga is deeply rooted in the Mandé tradition while exploring new musical ideas and innovative sonic worlds.
Balla Kouyaté’s lineage goes back more than 800 years to Balla Faséké, the first of an unbroken line of djelis in the Kouyaté clan. Famoro Dioubaté is recognized as one of West Africa’s most talented and graceful balafonists. Hailing from Conakry, Guinea, Famoro also comes from a long family lineage of griots (or djeli in Malinké), African oral historians and musicians, a sub-culture dating back to the 13th century. Bala Fanga, which means “power of the balafon,” stands firmly on the shoulders of this profound cultural legacy.
Bala Fanga: Famoro Dioubaté (balafon), Makane Kouyate (balafon), Idrissa Kone (talking drum & calabash), Muhammadu Konate (djembe), Saidou Sangare (bass), and Camara Sayon (vocals).
